Environmental Control Measures in Treatment of Dermatophytosis (Ringworm)

  1. Confine pets to a room that is easy to clean and disinfect.
  2. Thoroughly vacuum floors and furniture to remove infected hairs and spores. Discard or empty vacuum cleaner bag.
  3. Wash hardwood/concrete floors and other contact surfaces with detergent and water.
  4. Dust other surfaces with Swiffer cloths to remove spores.
  5. Launder (hot water wash with hot dryer) area rugs, animal bedding, and bed linens.
  6. Launder, disinfect, or discard pet toys and grooming aids.
  7. Disinfect hard floor surfacing with bleach solution (1 part bleach : 30 parts water).
  8. Vacuum and disinfect, if possible, any vehicles and transport cages used for pets.
  9. Repeat cleaning and disinfection of all the above twice weekly.
  10. After cure or removal of animal, test areas for contamination by wiping small square of Swifter cloths over exposed areas and soiled surfaces. Place in a plastic zip-lock bag and return to our office for testing.
